What will be the working conditions in the Hotel Management and Hospitality Segment?
Everyday presents a new situation. It is not like any other business where you can plan your day; here you have to excel in tackling diverse situations. The work environment is unenviable. You are in an air-conditioned elegant surroundings. The whole atmosphere is professional and productive. You meet with corporate executives, famed personalities and people from different countries. Thus you have a good social reach. There is never a dull moment as there is job variety. The emoluments compare favourably with the best in the country. At the same time the working hours are long and you could be in the morning, afternoon or night shifts as the hotel operates through 24 hours. If you are placed in the night shift you will have to adjust your routine accordingly and sleep during the day! You have to be a good stress manager and you cannot afford to be temperamental even if harassed by an irritating guest! You have to serve and it has to be “service with a smile”! Moreover, even if you are a manager you have to be willing to use your hands and do manual work if the situation so requires as the hotel atmosphere demands a tremendous dignity of labour.
What does the future hold for hospitality education in India? What role will your institute play in bringing that change?
The hospitality education in India is evolving. Things are being re-defined and value-addition is being done in the existing curriculum. There is also a great demand for trained Indian students and experienced Indian hotel managers abroad. A large percentage of students passing out of diploma/degree courses and one-year certificate courses are able to find jobs in the Middle East and other countries, including developed countries. Research figures show that only about 40 per cent of fresh pass-outs from hotel schools join hotels and restaurants. The rest join other sectors or go for higher studies or go abroad. The percentage of this trained staff increases as they spend some time in the industry and pick up necessary skills for the job. As an institute, we train staff and add value to these students, who can work in any environment whether in India or abroad as we bestow them with international standards in terms of training and education.
